The Wednesday before the party, John got some bad news his older brother died. John would have to go to the funeral, which was about a thousand miles away. He wouldn't be able to go to the party. He told Julie she didn't have to go and insisted she go to the party alone. He wanted to stay on the good side of Mitch, just in case there was a promotion for him in the future.
